Mexico Travel: Sightseeing and Must-sees

The old silver-mining town of Taxco, is a gorgeous colonial antique, and one of the most picturesque and pleasant places in Mexico. It clings to a steep hillside, has labyrinthine narrow cobbled streets, engagingly well-worn buildings and delightful plazas. The entire town has been declared a national historic monument.

The scenic railway journey of the Copper Canyon in the north connects Los Mochis on the Pacific coast with Chihuahua inland and includes several stops within the 20 canyons, passing through 86 tunnels and over 39 bridges. The railway is a considerable feat of engineering and, not surprisingly, took 90 years to build.

The beautiful colonial city of Oaxaca is well worth a visit to wander the interesting Zocalo, purchase great handicrafts and take excursions out to the archaeological sites of Monte Alban and Mitla. A real highlight on any itinerary is a visit to San Cristobal de las Casas, a traditional Chiapas highland town, which is also well situated for visiting the ruins of Palenque.

Mexico Travel: Ancient Cultures & Historical Wonders

A short drive from Villahermosa, and surrounded by emerald jungle, Palenque’s setting is superb and its Mayan architecture and decoration are exquisite. Evidence from pottery fragments indicates that the site was first occupied more than 1500 years ago, flourishing from 600 to 800 AD when many plazas and buildings were constructed, including the elaborate Temple of Inscriptions pyramid crypt.

Mexicans have had a talent for art and a love of bright colours since pre-Hispanic times. Today, Mexico is covered with murals and littered with galleries of contemporary and historic art, which are a highlight of the country for many visitors.

Mexico Travel: Exciting Cuba & Mexico City

Mexico Travel: Exciting Cuba

Cuba is an exciting new destination to discover and Havana is only a one hour flight away from Cancun. Cuba’s diverse mixture of sounds, rhythms, colours and dances, beautiful beaches, colonial architecture, warm friendly people and year-round temperatures of 25°C is a great extension to your Mexico travel experience.

Mexico Travel: Mexico City

One of the world’s most captivating and historic cities, Mexico City is famous not only for its vast size and population, but for its museums, colonial heritage, nearby archaeological treasure, and European ambience.

The historic centre of Mexico City is the Plaza de la Constitución, more commonly known as the Zocalo. The plaza was first paved in the 1520s by Cortés with stones from the ruins of the temples and palaces of the Aztec city of Tenochtitlán, the site on which Mexico City was built.

The Alameda, which was once an Aztec marketplace, is now a pleasant and verdant park. The streets around the Alameda are lined with colonial mansions, skyscrapers, lively cafes, restaurants, shops and markets.

Plaza Garibaldi is where the city’s out-of-work mariachi bands gather in the evenings, and the Zona Rosa is the highlife and nightlife district.

A short drive from the city is Teotihuacan, Mexico’s biggest ancient city and the capital of the country’s largest pre-Hispanic empire. Teotihuacán was the capital of Mexico’s first great civilisation, and the remains testify to its pre-eminence.

Be awed by the Avenue of the Dead, the 70m high Pyramid of the Sun, the Pyramid of the Moon and the Palace of the Quetzal Butterfly.
