The old silver-mining town of Taxco, is a gorgeous colonial antique, and one of the most picturesque and pleasant places in Mexico. The scenic railway journey of the Copper Canyon in the north connects Los Mochis on the Pacific coast with Chihuahua inland and includes several stops within the 20 canyons, passing through 86 tunnels and over 39 bridges. The railway is a considerable feat of engineering and, not surprisingly, took 90 years to build.

The beautiful colonial city of Oaxaca is well worth a visit to wander the interesting Zocalo, purchase great handicrafts and take excursions out to the archaeological sites of Monte Alban and Mitla. A real highlight on any itinerary is a visit to San Cristobal de las Casas, a traditional Chiapas highland town, which is also well situated for visiting the ruins of Palenque.
